 MAIL

All incoming and outgoing mail is inspected and/or read to prevent the introduction of contraband and protect the safety and security of the inmates, the staff, and the facility. Mail is processed within 24-hours of receipt by staff at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.

Incoming mail must include the inmate’s name and the following address: 675 NW Cherry Lane
                                                                                                                    Madras, OR   97741

We will not deliver mail that includes any of the following: Sexually explicit material, writing encouraging or instructing in the commission of a crime, magazine or newspaper clippings, internet printouts, Polaroid or instant photography, letters written in code, blackmail or extortion, crayon, white out, paints, lipstick, perfume, bodily fluids, etc.

Do not send blank pieces of paper, envelopes, or stamps to inmates. Inmates are able to purchase these items through commissary.

Inmates are allowed to have only 6 photographs in their possession at any one time. Photographs must be 4” x 6” or smaller in size.

VISITATION

Inmates not on disciplinary restriction are allowed visits after 7 days of confinement in the Jefferson County Jail. All inmates are given a visiting list, which they can fill out, containing up to 6 persons with whom they wish to have visits. Inmates can change their visiting lists every 30 days.

Inmates are allowed three (3) visits per week with no more than two (2) visitors at each visit. Visiting times are Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Those wishing to schedule a visit may do so by calling the jail at (541) 475-2869. Visits are in 30-minute increments and must be scheduled in advance. Visitors who are more than 10 minutes late for their scheduled visiting time will have their visit cancelled.

Scheduled visitors must present approved picture identification before each visit. The only exceptions are children under the age of 16. A parent or guardian must accompany any person under the age of 18 during visitation.

PLACING MONEY ON AN INMATE’S ACCOUNT

Money in the form of cash, bank cashier’s check, or money order may be placed on an inmate’s account during regular Sheriff’s Office business hours. If a visitor has a scheduled visit during non-business hours, they may also leave money at that time.

BRINGING ITEMS IN FOR AN INMATE

We do not accept any personal items for inmates. Inmates may, under special circumstances, request permission from the Jail Commander to have items brought in and placed in their property. These requests must be in writing and approved prior to the items being brought to the facility.

POSTING BAIL

There are two options when posting bail for the release of an inmate. You can post the bail in you name, or place the money on the inmate’s account and have the inmate post their own bail.

If you post bail for an inmate you must bring photo identification and the exact bail amount with you. (We do not have any way to make change!) You will need to fill out the paperwork with your name, address, etc. Be aware that the courts will take out up to 15% for court costs. They will take at least $5 but not more than $200 from your bail money. Any fines the person may be charged by the courts can be taken out of the bail money unless you make separate arrangements with the courts. When the person is totally done going to court on the charges (they are sentenced, the charges are dismissed, etc.) the remainder of your bail money will be mailed in the form of a check in your name to the address you provided on the paperwork. Please remember that in most cases you are only posting 10% of the security amount. If the person fails to show up for court or abide by the orders of the court at any time, the court can and will take your bail money and you may be required to pay the rest of the complete security amount.

If you place the money on the inmate’s account and have them bail themselves out, you need only bring the money you wish to put on the inmate’s account. The paperwork and liability will be in the inmate’s name. When they are done going to court however, any remaining bail money will be returned in the form of a check to the inmate. You will have to make arrangements with this individual if you want them to pay you back.

Once the bail has been posted it normally takes only 10 to 20 minutes to finish the paperwork and have the inmate out of the facility. This time frame could be extended due to a number of circumstances beyond our control (the person needs to sober up prior to release, the staff is busy bringing in other arrestees, we are waiting for a court date and time from another county, etc.) and we appreciate your patience.

PHONES

Inmates who have not lost the privilege due to disciplinary action generally have access to telephones from 8am to 10pm each day. Our phone system allows inmates to make collect calls or use company specific calling cards. These cards must be purchased through commissary and are $20 each. This will allow the inmate to make $20 worth of calls. Depending on where the inmate is calling to will determine the length of time that dollar amount will purchase. Phone calls are limited to 15 minutes. The phone system will warn you when the time limit is approaching, and will disconnect after that time has past.

COMMISSARY

Inmates are allowed to purchase up to $45 of commissary items each week. This amount does not include telephone calling cards. Commissary includes hygiene items such as deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, etc; Miscellaneous items such as envelopes, games, cards, etc.; Medical items such as over-the-counter medications, various lotions, denture supplies, contact supplies, etc.; and Snacks such as candy, coffee, chips, and jerky. Inmates with money on their accounts are eligible to buy commissary items. The orders are placed on Sundays and the items are received on Thursday.
